4th of July Tribute to America

Happy 4th of July. America's a big, messy, complicated place and far be it for me to try to sum it up here. So instead let's take a look at what better minds than mine have had to say about it:

"We're all very different people. We're not Watusi, we're not Spartans, we're Americans. With a capital "A", huh? And you know what that means? Do you? That means that our forefathers were kicked out of every decent country in the world. We are the wretched refuse. We're the underdog. We're mutts."

Simon & Garfunkel, "America"

"America is the only country that went from barbarism to decadence without civilization in between."-- Oscar Wilde

Duke Wayne:

"Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people." -- HL Mencken

Lee Greenwood, "God Bless the USA"

"Americans traditionally love to fight. All real Americans love the sting of battle. When you were kids, you all admired the champion marble shooter, the fastest runner, big league ball players, the toughest boxers. Americans love a winner and will not tolerate a loser. Americans play to win all the time. I wouldn't give a hoot in hell for a man who lost and laughed. That's why Americans have never lost, and will never lose a war... because the very thought of losing is hateful to Americans. "

"The Patriot":

“Whoever wants to know the heart and mind of America had better learn baseball, the rules and realities of the game and do it by watching first some high-school or small-town teams”- Jacques Barzun

"Field of Dreams":

"America's greatest strength, and its greatest weakness, is our belief in second chances, our belief that we can always start over, that things can be made better."-- Anthony Walton

"American Soldier":

"America is the greatest, freest and most decent society in existence. It is an oasis of goodness in a desert of cynicism and barbarism. This country, once an experiment unique in the world, is now the last best hope for the world."-- Dinesh D'Souza

Springsteen's "American Land":

"America is more than just a country, it's an idea. An idea that's supposed to be contagious. " -- Bono

West Side Story, "America":

"The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more." -- John Adams

Happy 4th everybody, from Barstool Sports.
