The Story Behind Jose Trevino's Walk-Off Last Night On His Late Father's Birthday Transcends Sports In So Many Ways

The Yankees have dealt with a wave of injuries in the last few days and found themselves on the brink of losing a home series to the Orioles and extending their losing streak to a season high four games. They needed some help from some unsung heroes and one of those guys came to be backup (maybe now starting) catcher Jose Trevino. Now before you roll your eyes here at some Yankee story, I ask you to put that bias aside and learn about this man was dealing with last night.
He had A LOT going on.
For starters Trevino is a Texas native, born and raised in Corpus Christi, about an hour from where the horrible school shooting took place yesterday. Just a terrible, terrible day for all of America, but finding out all that happened so close to you hits home a bit more.
On top of that, yesterday was Trevino's late father's birthday. If you've lost a loved one of that magnitude you know how hard it is to do much of anything on those important days. I know I'm personally useless. It doesn't matter how many years removed you are from the loss, it really doesn't get easier to deal with.
In Trevino's third game of his career back in 2018 he hit his first ever walk off. It was on Father's Day, just a week after he became a dad for the first time.
You can imagine how emotional the man was afterwards.
Well last night Trevino's spot in the order came up again in another game-winning spot. Having already blasted a homer and the game-tying hit earlier, it was all set up for this to be Jose's night. He proceeded to rip a 1-2 cutter down the left field line for the ball game.
You can actually see Trevino look to the sky as he rounded 1st and say "papi." His father grew up a big Yankees fan and you know he was watching. Is it dusty in here?
Somethings man.
If all that doesn't give you goosebumps then I don't know what will. Jose has come over from the Rangers and given this team everything. He's an incredibly easy human being to root for as you see in those interviews. He's an A+ defender and has provided some timely hits at the plate as well. I appreciate this man and what he's about and I hope he continues to find success with the team.
P.S. Trevino getting that walk off and eliminating the chance for Hicks to strike out again on 3 pitches with the game on the line proves how much of a pal he is. No one needed to see that. Thank you Jose.
