Banks' Winter Olympic Blog: Wednesday February 12th

medal count feb 12

Big day for Norway, as they jumped back into the lead with 11 total medals. A down day for the Americans, only taking a silver and a bronze on Tuesday. I’m not losing faith by any means, but the Shaun Whites and Bode Millers of the world can’t keep shitting up and down their legs. Time to do what America does best and step up when it counts.

It’s not all bad news though. I’m not big on celebrating bronze medals, but Erin Hamlin became the first American to win an individual luge medal ever. Kudos.

Devin Logan earned a silver medal in women’s ski slopestyle. As silly a sport as that is, we’ll take it.

Speaking of silly… Yard sale!

Shaun White was the choker of the day. Can’t say I’m surprised. Good thing he pulled out of the other event to focus on this one. Woops.

The fix was in for the Russians’ 2-1 women’s hockey win after a controversial call kept a 1st period goal off the board for the Japanese.

However, Japan DID score their first Olympic goal in 16 years in the 3rd. They had plenty of time to work on their celly and boy did they absolutely crush it.

Everyone loves a good ole fashioned cross country pile up!

And the end of an era. Never forget.

What a beatdown. Last Thursday night I let out an audible shriek when I saw Costas’ eyeball pop up on my screen. Never have I seen someone on a higher horse fall off so hard. The timing couldn’t have been better. The Olympics is Bob Costas. Without them he has no meaning. I figured NBC would be pulling all the stops to get the Sochi off his face, but their efforts were futile. They couldn’t stop that infection, nor could they contain it. DOWN GOES COSTAS DOWN GOES COSTAS!

Now without further ado, there’s a new sheriff in town.

Today I’m watching Ice Hockey, obviously. I’m going through hockey withdrawal and I need my fix. Quick preview of Sweden vs. Czech Republic, courtesy of SWE’s Nick Backstrom and CZE’s Milan Michalek.

Translation: The Czechs don’t stand a chance. They STILL have that scumbag Jagr. This isn’t Nagano ’98 bro. Not a ballsy pick by any means, but I’m taking the Swedes. They’re just too good, and I’m confident they’ll be somewhere on the podium when it’s all said and done. Lundqvist is a stud between the pipes, and they’ve got the cleanest sweaters in the tournament. Game over. Sweden wins 4-1.

Today’s Smoke: I’m gonna get up on my soapbox for a second here. Silje Norendal has been the apple of my eye since the day I laid eyes on her weeks ago. The Olympic smokeshow to end all smokeshows. I tried to hold out on posting this Norwegian piece of heaven and I can’t keep my feelings inside any longer. I’m in love and I don’t care who knows it. She is my flame, my muse. Those of you who requested her can kick rocks, she’s mine.
