Pittsburgh Pirates v Chicago Cubs

Honestly, good for the Cubs and their fans. They’ve been having such a tough year this year, so it’s great that they’ve finally had something to be excited about.

But no, really. Like, I’m totally jealous as fuck of Cubs fans. I don’t even care if this team goes on to win the World Series or not. As a guy who has to follow the entire league closely, the Cubs have easily been the most fun to watch, and it’s not even close. And the players are having just as much fun as the fans who are watching them on a nightly basis. World Series or not, this team has been a blast to follow.

It’s such a crazy dynamic, because the Cubs are absolutely a powerhouse-type team. But it’s not like the 1998 Yankees or something, where every baseball fan outside of the Bronx despised that team. The Cubs are great, they’re incredibly likable, and I honestly think it’s because they have so many storylines within the storyline. Obviously the major storyline has been their pursuit of their first World Series title since 1908, but all of the different characters on this 2016 Cubs team have been just as much of a story as the chase for World Series glory itself.

Sunday night was just another chapter along the way, as 24-year-old Willson Contreras, the top catching prospect in the MLB, was called up to the big leagues on Friday. He made his major league debut that night as a defensive replacement, but did not get an at-bat. He got his first at-bat on Sunday night when he pinch hit for Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks in the sixth inning, and came to the plate to a standing ovation before hitting the first pitch he saw in the majors to dead center for a home run.

I’m not gonna say anything to jinx it. (It feels like the Cubs’ year.)
