Wake Up With A Classic Earl Weaver Argument With An Umpire
The Terry Collins video reminded me of one of my all time favorite clips. Former Orioles manager, Earl Weaver, absolutely rips this umpire a new one. The umpires had called a balk on Orioles pitcher, Mike Flanagan, and Earl disagreed. Joe West would break out his wristbands if he was an umpire on this diamond. This is just absolutely classic Earl.
“You and your crew are here for one reason, to fuck us!” is such a classic line, you’ll get a laugh out of me overtime that little man shouts it. The “don’t touch me” conversation went on for like 30 seconds too, just absolutely hilarious. Earl threatens to punch the umpire right in the nose, absolute laugh out loud funny stuff here. They sounded like 2 brothers bickering back and forth. The umpire does give Earl a nice toss and throws out a hell of an ejection sign, even gives us a little “BOOM” when he does it.
Maybe my favorite part of this starts at the 2:00 min mark, Earl says to the umpire, “you wait about 5 or 10 fucking years to know who’s in the Hall Of Fame.” The umpire doesn’t even hesitate and says to Earl, “You gonna be in the Hall Of Fame?” Earl responds back with “YOU KNOW IT!” Ump doesn’t wait a second and says “for fucking up World Series? You gonna be in the Hall Of Fame for fucking up World Series?” An absolute classic back-and-forth from an old school umpire and manager. If this exchange happened today and was caught on tape and put on twitter, we’d have allllll sorts of reaction gifs to that line from the umpire.
Todays ump’s wouldn’t let anyone talk to them like this, they’d be thrown out before they could open their lips. I mean this was a 3 + minute exchange, you rarely see any umpire and manager argue for that long. The best part of this video is if you look at the scoreboard in the back, it’s the second batter of the game!!! Earl was that worked up that early in the game. Phenomenal.
“You better get going!” the umpire says as he walks away. Earl responds back with “what the hell are you gonna do about it?” and he starts to leave too. Then makes a U turn and heads right for the ump and starts talking about how the umpire touched him earlier in the argument. There are so many hilarious parts to this fight, it’s just great.
Earl could argue and bitch with the best of them, even though he was a tiny man, he wouldn’t hold his tongue. I need more mic’d up arguments, I need the video with audio of exactly what they are saying. Do the right thing MLB, RELEASE THE MANAGER- UMPIRE TAPES!
