Worst Final Jeopardy Ever: Alex Trebek Hinted That He'll Likely Retire From "Jeopardy" In 2 Years

Jeopardy-Cover

TMZ- Don’t count on Alex Trebek to stay on “Jeopardy” past 2020. The iconic gameshow host, who’s been at the helm of “Jeopardy” since 1984, tells TMZ there’s a “50/50 [chance] and a little less” that he’ll stay on board when his contract expires in two years.

Talk about a hell of a kick in the dick to receive on a Monday morning. The Quiz Show King may officially be stepping down from his iron throne in two years. And don’t talk to me about him retiring in 2020 either. 2020 feels like it’s still 100 years away, not basically 16 months away. Alex Trebek no longer showing up on my TV would be way worse than a relative no longer showing up on holidays. That man has been bringing joy to my life 5 days a week for literally as long as I can remember. Even my best friends are hit or miss on the rare chances I see them these days. But Trebek somehow brings the thunder for a half hour every single night.

I just hope that when Trebek does decide to retire, he lets the world know early enough so we can mentally prepare ourselves and give him a Kobe Bryant retirement tour. Each contestant should bring a gift for Trebek to go along with their little intro story at the beginning of every episode. And if you are the defending champion, you better have another gift ready to go along with your next story. I mean the guy has even started scouting out his replacement.

When the time comes for him to retire, Trebek has got at least two people in mind to replace him. “I mentioned to our producer not so long ago that the fellow that does play-by-play for the Los Angeles Kings – they should consider him,” Trebek said referring to Alex Faust. He also dropped another name, should producers want a woman to fill his shoes. “There is an attorney, Laura Coates,” he said. “She’s African-American and she appears some of the cable news shows from time to time.”

Live look at Ken Jennings:

Can Alex Trebek be any more of a mensch? He has not only carried that network with a dead weight lead-in/follow-up like Pat Sajak for years (depending on your local listings), but Trebek is even willing to help them find his replacements. The man is truly a national treasure. Despite it being a part of my nightly routine, I would be more than fine just cancelling the show without Trebek. But he’s out here trying to do the best for #TheTeamTheTeamTheTeam.

That being said and despite not knowing anything about them, there is no way I would bring in either of these people to replace Trebek off the bat. I am going to hate whoever his replacement is just because I will compare every thing they do to the Game Show Gawd and they will lose every time. I will pick apart every joke they say or don’t say, their inflection when reading hip hop lyrics, get upset if they don’t absolutely ether a contestant for being an idiot, and probably won’t even believe the answers they have written on the card in front of them. In fact, the people at Jeopardy should just hire a chump to replace Trebek for a year and then bring one of those two people on after that year. Because anyone that has watched Drew Carey on The Price Is Right knows how hard it is to replace a legend. And replacing a legend like this is flat-out impossible.
