Homestretch/Wall Street Wednesday
Markets strong again today. We have talked in detail how the threat of Trump-inspired tensions escalating into a full-blown trade war have been the primary driver of market activity in both directions for the past several weeks. However, this week investors have largely looked past the issue. Instead, the uptrend in equities has been supported by both a strong corporate earnings season and improvements in recent economic data.
“Never short a dull market”, and as traders are all clamoring to leave early for the upcoming 3 day weekend, I will stay happy just riding this wave as volumes continue to diminish.

TENNIS
Can’t think of a place I would want to be LESS than the day session of the US Tennis Open. 95 degree weather and surrounded by oppressive humidity and depressing douchebags.
I say this because I took the train this morning with 2 finance guys wearing matching Tough Mudder t-shirt’s on their way to the Open. It was an hour of listening to them splitting their conversations between business, craft cocktails, and women’s tennis loud enough for the whole car to hear.
There’s a 1% chance those 2 read this Homestretch, but on the off chance they do, know that I hate you both.
BOXING
Canello v GGG 24/7 started last night on HBO… I assume they will squeeze in three episodes before the rematch on September 15th.
These pre-fight specials haven’t been as good as they were back when it was Mayweather v De La Hoya, Hatton, or Pacquiao, but I still like to wait until fight night and then binge-watch the fuck out of them as an hour-and-a-half intro right before the undercard begins.
Wall Street Wednesday
I wrote a story 3 weeks ago about my first Wall Street Christmas party at The Downtown Athletic Club, and how I was summarily thrown out and then eventually robbed on my subway ride home. I was talking to a buddy of mine named Kevin last week and he reminded me that he was also there that night of the DAC party.
Not only was he there, but he was extremely disappointed that I failed to include a detail from that evening that I somehow TOTALLY AND INEXPLICABLY forgot, but I am VERY happy he reminded me of.
Without this heads up I would’ve went to my grave never thinking about it again, and that would’ve been a shame. If anyone else from my past has a Wall Street story they think might’ve slipped through my cavernous memory cracks, please hit me up.
Back to Kev… Here’s what I now remember: My firm was never allowed to have another party at the DAC after that year. Partially because of the drunken antics of me and a handful of other guys, but mainly because someone drew a whipped cream mustache on OJ Simpson’s Heisman portrait at some point during the festivities. What makes this memory extra special was that it was me that did it, AND I did it at a party that took place 6 months BEFORE the Juice cut the head off of his wife… So you could say that I am a “drunken murderous mystic.”
“But where would you get whipped cream at such a fancy party, Large?”, asks some generic-anonymous-forensic-blog-reader at the bottom of the comment section… I don’t know, man. We just did.
Point is, before the double homicide, OJ was a well-liked celebrity. However, something in my DNA, when mixed with the right cocktail of drugs and alcohol, was able to sniff out that he would soon become one of the most notorious figures of the late 90’s, And I (unlike Judge Ito) exacted my punishment on his painted likeness.
I couldn’t be prouder of myself right now… 25 years later.
For the record, I got the same feeling a few weeks back about Ray Lewis, so lets keep an eye on that motherfucker.
Take a report.
