Wake Up With Greg Maddux's 76-Pitch Complete Game
Don’t get me wrong, no-hitters and perfect games are some of the best pitched games ever, obviously. But this game has to be up there. A complete game in just 76(??)-pitches and a full game played in 2 hours and 7 minutes? Unreal. A game like this will NEVER happen again, no one will ever have a complete game in under 80 pitches, I stand by that.
The Braves went onto win this game 4-1 and Maddux improved to 14-3 with the victory. He obviously went the distance, gave up 5 hits, only 1 run, and struck out 6. A game like this has to be a combination of you having your absolute best stuff, and the other team having some terrible at-bats. Around the third inning is probably when you have an idea he is on, try and foul some pitches off, watch some balls, drive that pitch count up, this is like slow pitch softball where everyone is just hacking away. He only got in a 2 ball count twice, with no batters getting to a 3 ball count.
But doing some digging, I am finding conflicting reports. The Youtube Tittle is “Maddux’s 76-pitch complete game”, in the video the announcers say 78 pitches, and on baseball reference it says 77. So we have 3 different pitch totals. Regardless if it is 76,77, or 78, it’s an insanely quick paced game, something Maddux was always known for, but this takes the cake.
So now I actually don’t know what to believe. HOW MANY PITCHES DID THE PELICAN THROW? I’m calling him a pelican because that is 100% what he turned into.
