Movie Trailer Roundup

We got some HEATERS in this bunch, as well as some garbage. Such is trailer life.

1. Where Hands Touch

So a movie where a black woman falls in love with a Hitler youth Nazi? This ain’t it, chief. It’s written/directed by Amma Asante (Belle) and stars Amandla Stenberg (The Hunger Games), George MacKay (Captain Fantastic) and Abbie Cornish (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri).

2. The Favourite (Trailer #2)

This trailer makes the movie look even more dark and twisted than the first one did. Yorgos Lanthimos (The Killing Of A Sacred Deer) is directing this story about two Cousins (Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone) trying to win the favor of Queen Anne (Olivia Coleman). It also stars Nicholas Hoult (X-Men:First Class) and Mark Gatiss (Sherlock). Instant seal of approval from me.

3. 22 July

A drama based on the aftermath of the 2011 Norway attacks, I’m not entirely sure a fiction based drama is the best way to go with this. I thought the same thing with one of Paul Greengrass‘s previous project ‘United 93′, though, and that turned out ok. My personal feelings are that you shouldn’t give insane shooters like this monster any sort of limelight because at worst, it may inspire more shooters who crave that sick spotlight. At best, you make a decent movie? I don’t get it. The one actor you may or may not know in the cast is Thorbjørn Harr, who was blood-eagled in the show ‘Vikings’

4. At Eternity’s Gate

Willem Dafoe (The Florida Project) is almost too perfect as Vincent Van Gogh. This looks like a perfectly small scale project with some fantastic actors, stunning scenery, and hopefully a well told story. Co-starring is my BOY Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal), Rupert Friend (Homeland) and Oscar Isaac (Star Wars: The Force Awakens). Director Julian Schnabel (Before Night Falls) is directing off a Jean-Claude Carrière script.

5. Halloween (Final Trailer)

We had an intense debate about this on the pod, and when I wrote about this after the first trailer, i put together a little breakdown of the RT scores:

  • Halloween(1978): 93%
  • Halloween II (1981): 31%
  • Halloween III(1982): 40%
  • Halloween IV (1988): 29%
  • Halloween V (1989): 14%
  • Halloween VI (1995): 6%
  • Halloween H20 (1998): 52%
  • Halloween: Resurrection(2002): 12%
  • Halloween (2007): 25%
  • Halloween II (2009): 19%

I don’t know what about that screams MORE HALLOWEEN, but here we are. Jeff also made a breakdown of the many retcons of this franchise, explaining how the timeline is shaping up.

6. The Oath (Trailer #2)

There isn’t much different here than the first trailer, but it seems to be a fun look at the common “Don’t talk politics at thanksgiving!” and racist uncle troupes. It stars Ike Barinholtz (Suicide Squad), Tiffany Haddish (Girls Trip), John Cho (Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle), Nora Dunn (Pineapple Express) and Billy Magnussen(The Big Short). Barinholtz also wrote and directed this action/comedy thriller.

7. Anna and the Apocalypse

So, ripoff ‘Shaun of the Dead’? Weird, also pass.

8. Everybody Knows

Real life power couple Penélope Cruz (Vanilla Sky) and Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men) teaming up for a psychological thriller? Sign me allllll the way up for this. I love both of their styles, and can’t wait to see them work together in one of my favorite genres. This is written/directed by Asghar Farhadi and premiered at Cannes back in May.

9. Instant Family

I don’t think Mark Wahlberg (The Departed) needs to play a dad anymore, we get the point. This comedy drama also stars Rose Byrne (Insidious), Isabella Moner (Sicario: Day of the Soldado) and Octavia Spencer (The Shape of Water). Sean Anders (That’s My Boy) wrote and directed this uninteresting looking movie.

10. Teen Spirit

While the subject matter (A teen who wins an international singing competition) is not really my scene, this looks visually appealing and has some heavy star power.  Elle Fanning (Maleficent) is the lead of Max Minghella‘s first project.

11. Kursk

A telling of the Kursk disaster in 2000, this looks like a solid telling about how international diplomacy and resentment can come at the cost of human lives. The cast is great group of foreign actors/actresses, including Colin Firth (Kingsman: The Secret Service), Michael Nyqvist (John Wick), Léa Seydoux (Spectre), Matthias Schoenaerts (Red Sparrow) and Max von Sydow (Game of Thrones). Thomas Vinterberg (The Hunt) is directing off a Robert Rodat (Saving Private Ryan) script.

12. My Dinner With Herve

I never realized Villechaize’s life was this badass. This marks back to back rough attempts at accents for Dinklage between this, and his role as Eitri in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’. I really don’t know much about ‘Fantasy Island’ other than Ricardo Montalban and Villechaize’s iconic “De Plane, De Plane” line, however I do know Villechaize had a very rough life leading into his suicide due to his medical conditions. I’m interested, but hope the accent plays better in this HBO Film. Jamie Dornan (Fifty Shades of Grey) and Andy Garcia(Ocean’s 11) are co-starring on this Sacha Gervasi (Hitchcock) project.

13. Assassination Nation (Trailer #3)

I like dark comedies, but I’m not sure how I feel about this still. This was the best of all the trailers by far, but it still comes off sort of campy, with a ‘Mom and Dad’ feel. The notable names are Joel McHale (The Soup), Bella Thorne (Instagram) and Bill Skarsgård (It). Sam Levinson (The Wizard of Lies) wrote and directed.

14. Wildlife (Trailer #2)

You get a little deeper look into the story of the movie, but I’ll reiterate my thoughts from the first trailer. Paul Dano is a depressing-ass dude. Damn good actor, but his roles just make me sad like “There Will Be Blood”, “Little Miss Sunshine”, “12 Years a Slave”. This is his directorial debut and it looks true to form with what he’s good at. He co-wrote this with Zoe Kazan who was great in “The Big Sick”, but this seems a little more like another movie she was in which you might remember, “Revolutionary Road”. In fact, it looks almost exactly like that. I love Jake G and Carey Mulligan absolutely killed it in “Mudbound”. This should be a pretty strong performance driven piece that will make you feel very sad. Also, can I get a hell yea for Bill Camp getting more work??? He was great as the detective in “The Night Of”.

15. The Beach Bum

Oh hell yes, pimp. This looks to be extremely my shit, as well as an extremely McConaughey movie. Apparently a pure comedy, this stars Matthew McConaughey (Alright x3), Zac Efron (High School Musical), Isla Fisher (Hot Rod), Snoop Dog (Pitch Perfect 2), Jimmy Buffet (Mickstape), AND Jonah Hill (Failing Upwards). It’s written and directed by Harmony Korine (Spring Breakers).
