SHIT: Phillies President David Montgomery Publicly Endorses Ruben Amaro
PHILLY – Less than two weeks after surgery to remove cancer from a bone from his right jaw, David Montgomery attended the Phillies’ predraft planning meeting in late May. The team’s president has missed few days of work since then, even as he recovers from a significant procedure, and polls his baseball people on a regular basis. The next month could enact change for a roster worth more than $180 million that is on pace to win 71 games. Montgomery believes the current executives in place, including general manager Ruben Amaro Jr., are capable of overseeing those decisions. “I just believe that group of people gave us the successful period we had,” Montgomery said earlier this week. “They had different roles in it. I know people focus on Ruben’s role having changed vis-a-vis 2009 vs. 2008. But I talked to Pat Gillick about our club this morning. Pat Gillick sat in that entire draft. It’s not like we’re not benefiting from the thinking of the same people we had before. That’s why you have to look at whole body of work. Have we been served well? My answer to that is yes.” Amaro has drawn criticism for delaying a rebuilding process as the Phillies wallow for the third consecutive season with an older roster. The general manager has often alluded to his tenuous job status, although Amaro is under contract through 2015 and Montgomery offered him a vote of confidence.
Are we in The Twilight Zone? Is nothing real anymore? On what fucking planet does the President of an organization spending $180 million on players giving a last place effort have good faith in the man who put that roster together? Amaro almost by himself drove this Rolls Royce into a ditch where it became totaled. Now he’s still trying to drive a broken down POS back onto the highway. Montgomery could be BS’ing everyone, but for what reason? This team is obviously not going to get better before it gets worse because of the moves he has made. A lot worse.
I’ll tell you what I can endorse, not going to any fucking games. And no, that is not “bandwagon” attitude. I still follow and watch this team every single night while hoping for the best. But I’m not spending $15 on parking, $30 a ticket, $8 a beer and $4 a hotdog for to watch this struggle to get 3 hits on its way to being shut out for the 40th time at home this year. I can easily drown my sorrows about this franchise from home.
