3 Chapsters: Do You Like Sex, Shooting Heroin To Start Your Day, And Robbing Banks? Cherry By Niko Walker
Cherry is a 2018 debut novel by American author Nico Walker. It concerns an unnamed narrator’s time in college, as a soldier during the War in Iraq, and life as a drug addict and bank robber after returning from the war during the midst of the American Opioid epidemic.
Before we begin, let me set the table a little bit here. I love to read. Well, more specifically I love the idea of reading. I rarely sit down to read a book anymore. I mostly just buy books from a used bookstore near my house because the idea is romantic. There’s just something about holding the warn book gently in your hand as you kick one leg over the other, reclining back, and sipping on a tall glass of coffee. To me, that’s a lovely afternoon.
My attention span isn’t long, so instead of being engrossed in the literary world for hours, I stay for about the length of two Office episodes. In fact, I usually spend more time searching for the next book I will read than I do actually reading the book.
For that reason, I will give you book recommendations for the social media addicted folks.
First up, Cherry by Niko Walker.
Skim back up to the top and read that brief description.
My goodness, right? What can wet the whistle like a drug-addicted soldier who turns into a bank robber and sex fiend? You miss the part about sex fiend? Trick question. It’s not written there but it is written in the first 3 chapters of which I read.
The first 3 chapters are an absolute delight. While reading the first chapter alone, I thought, “Damn. I bet I would love this entire book.” I read about the main character’s drug-filled life that was plagued by either quitting jobs or being fired from jobs, sexual partners gained and lost, longing for belonging, and so much more. In just the first chapter alone, we are given the play by play of bank robbery, introduced to a love interest starved by heroin addiction, a near-death experience, and we have our interest piqued for what will go wrong.
The main character, like many of us, had the sole purpose of finding relational belonging as a young man. Sex, titties, and even anal stuff are what filled his mind. Pussy too, probably. He says “cunt” in the dialogue which I appreciate. It doesn’t read like Shakespeare. It reads like the story of a troubled fella. It is the story of troubled fella. Whether it be the monotony of trivial jobs like being a shoe salesman or explaining the vagabond nature of a drug user, we walk through it all in just the first 3 chapters which can only be described as a rollercoaster.
In summary:
Possibility of returning to read another 3 chapters: 60 percent
Boners gained while reading: 0
The Amount of audible “Oh Shits” I said while reading: 2
Looks good on your bookshelf: 100 percent
Conversation Starter: You betcha
3 Chapsters Review: Actually Good.
Let’s meet back here next week and go over another book. I’ll give you an update of Cherry by Niko Walker as well.
Good work, everybody.
