Bryce Harper Signing With The Padres Would Actually Make Sense
So I guess the Phillies rumors were wildly overblown, eh? Because just a few days after the city of Philadelphia threw a parade down Broad Street after rumors emerged that he had agreed to a deal to play in the City of Filth, Bryce has taken a meeting with a new team, the San Diego Padres. Now, of course this doesn’t mean that the Phillies are out. They are probably still the favorites to land him…I think. It’s actually impossible to say right now. The rumor is that they have offered him the most years and the most money, and he would have signed a while ago but the one caveat is, he doesn’t want to play in Philadelphia. He doesn’t want his legacy tied to the Phillies. And we know Bryce cares a lot about that type of thing. He thinks about what hat his plaque will have in Cooperstown. And apparently he just hasn’t completely sold himself on Philly. Again, money talks and things change, but that seems to be what the situation is at the moment.
So now he’s meeting with the Padres. And I think that would be an AWESOME landing spot for him. Not even joking. There’s just something about the Padres to me that is “cool”. I think it’s the good people of the town of San Diego. They don’t try hard. They don’t pretend to be anything they’re not. And while the Padres don’t have a ton of pressure to win, the team has been looking for a culture change since those few good years in the early 2000s. Bryce would be electric in San Diego. They have a cool ball park, he’d still get the LA shine from playing and battling the Dodgers, and he’d be the caliber of player the Padres have needed since Tony Gwynn.
If he’s going to go somewhere besides the Nats, which seems like a lock, I’d love for it to be the Padres. They are a likable team, in a likable city, and now that they lost the Chargers could certainly use a break.
And plus, where would you rather live, Philly…
….or San Diego?
It’s no DC, but it ain’t bad.
