Firefighters have rescued a mountain lion that was stuck in a tree outside a home in the California desert.

The homeowner called for help after spotting the cougar close to his home near the edge of the San Bernardino mountains.

The big cat was perched on a branch about 15m (50ft) above ground. State wildlife officials tranquillised the feline before San Bernardino County firefighters lowered the animal to the ground using a rescue harness. The mountain lion was assessed by experts before being released back into the wild.

Am I crazy to say that I’d rather go into a burning building to rescue people than go up in a tree to save a mountain lion? Like if I’m a firefighter and I roll up to the scene I’m staying in the truck or I’m faking some kind of illness because the last thing I’m doing is going up in a tree to rescue a MOUNTAIN LION. Fuck outta here…

If the mountain lion got up their on its own then I’m sure it’s perfectly capable of getting down too. I’m paid to fight fires, not animals designed to rip my face off. Every job has a “is this worth it” moment. Accountants have busy season. Garbage men have it when it’s -15 degrees outside and you have to go pick up the trash. Firefighters have it when you’re faced with rescuing a mountain lion.

While I have you here I guess it’s a decent time to discuss which athlete could kill a mountain lion with his or her barehands.

My personal pick is King Louis Voit. The mountain lion would see him and run for the hills.

P.S. This made me remember that the people who used to own my home in New Jersey had a pet mountain lion in like the 70s. The milk bottle is still out in the back somewhere. I live in a perfectly normal suburban town, not in the woods. They just had a mountain lion roaming around. I have no idea how anyone was willing to be their neighbor. It’s one of the more unexplainable things I’ve been told in my life.
