Keith Hernandez In Hot Water For Calling Broken Bat "Dead Soldier" On Memorial Day
NYDN – Twitter lit up Monday night when Mets announcer Keith Hernandez referred to a broken bat as a “dead soldier” on Memorial Day. Hernandez, whose father, John, served in World War II, was simply using a baseball term, albeit on a delicate day. “We’ll address the matter with Keith,” an SNY spokesperson said during the Mets’ 2-1 win over the Yankees. “It was an honest mistake and a poor choice of words.” Daniel Murphy’s bat splintered against Phil Hughes in the first inning on a groundout to Yankees’ first Lyle Overbay. “Well, that is a dead soldier right there, folks, laying in that infield dirt,” Hernandez said on WPIX-11 while the replay aired. “This is… ouch. That’s what you call getting sawed off.”
A poor choice of words? Yes. Bad timing? Absolutely. But if you’re actually offended by this or think that Keith Hernandez is some sort of unAmerican asshole, you’re a fucking dickhead. People commenting on youtube “Dumb fucking asshole piece of shit” “Hey keith Fuck you Fuck your mom or whoever raised you Fuck everything you believe in and fuck your wife and kids.” Give me a fucking break. Guy used a baseball expression in a baseball game. Not like he thought ahead of time about making a ill timed joke about soliders of war dying and did it on purpose. Not like Keith Hernandez isn’t as grateful as the next person because he called a broken bat a dead solider. These people all fired up are probably the same assholes who spent all day yesterday saying “Today is not about barbecues and the beach and having fun.” The people who all the sudden become diehard American patriots and want to compare who is the most patriotic like its some sort of competition. Get off your high horse and stop making mountains out of molehills. Everyone is thankful for the people who paid the ultimate price to defend our country. Using an unfortunate expression at the wrong time doesn’t change that.
