Baker Mayfield First Met His New Wife By Following and Unfollowing Her on Instagram Until She Agreed To Have Lunch With Him

Alright so unless you've been living under a rock for the past week, you know that Baker Mayfield just got married to Emily Wilkinson. Smart move by my quarterback...get that out of the way before the season starts and give yourself time to completely focus on the playoff run. But anyways, as you could imagine, Emily is rather attractive.

Any man's dream! But as good looking as she is, I could also envision a scenario in which she was the one trying to date Baker Mayfield. You know, the Heisman Trophy winner, #1 pick, multi-millionaire, savior of the city of Cleveland, etc. Seems like a pretty desirable person to be with. But apparently, it was the complete opposite.

Mina Kimes wrote an article this morning that detailed many things about Baker, but what stuck out to me was this little snippet of information regarding how he met his new wife.

The quarterback and his fiancée, who is from Nebraska, were introduced in 2017 by a mutual friend. At the time, Wilkinson was living in Los Angeles. She says she was wary of dating a "punk football player" and ignored Mayfield's advances for months: He repeatedly followed and unfollowed her on Instagram, trying to attract her attention. Finally, in late December, they exchanged messages. He begged her to meet him before the Rose Bowl, his final college football game. She reluctantly agreed to grab lunch.

Damn, Baker! Shooters shoot! Classic "hard to get" move by Wilkinson, but it appears she finally exchanged messages with him after he won the Heisman. I wonder what would've happened if Lamar Jackson had won? Baker probably never would've gotten a first date. A first date that sounds pretty interesting...

"I was assuming he'd be the typical playboy athlete," says Wilkinson, who is four years older than Mayfield. Because the Rose Bowl was the next day, she thought they'd spend most of their date talking about the game. But it barely came up. Instead, she says, Mayfield spent their entire first date peppering her with questions about herself, her family, her plans for the future. The next day, after Oklahoma lost, ending its season, the quarterback texted Wilkinson and told her he was staying in LA. Three days later, he moved in with her and her brothers. Six months later, Emily and Baker were engaged.

Lots to digest here. First of all, Baker is clearly a good guy. We knew that though. And she's four years older? Makes sense, he's mature for his age. But how about the fact that in a span of four days, they went from hanging out for the first time to moving in together. It was love at first sight! And then six months later they were engaged. I have no problem with how fast they moved. Baker has always been a fast mover. He took the Browns from 0-16 to title contender in one year. This quick dating process was nothing. Plus, which one of these two wouldn't want to move fast together? They're the perfect power couple and officially the Royal Family of Cleveland. Here's to the next 100 years (and many Super Bowls)!
