'JOKER' Is Being Called A Masterpiece, Oscar Contender
We’ve reached peak-hype for ‘Joker’, folks.
The movie premiered at the Venice International Film Festival over the weekend and it is receiving incredible praise.
I do always laugh at the “standing ovation” headlines from film festivals. An 8-minute standing ovation is an incredibly long amount of time to be clapping. Whenever I hear stuff like this, I usually trim off a few minutes and assume there has been some exaggerating going on.
Anyway, the first reviews are in (88% on Rotten Tomatoes, 75 on Metacritic) and people can’t stop raving about the movie…
Joaquin Phoenix is also receiving crazy Oscar buzz…
This is all fucking awesome to see. As a huge Joaquin Phoenix fan (everything, for me, from ‘Walk the Line’ to ‘Her’), it doesn’t shock me one bit to hear that he crushed this role. He even touched on his version of the Joker compared to that of Heath Ledger’s…
I’m incredibly intrigued to see if Joaquin’s Joker can really go toe-to-toe with Leonardo DiCaprio’s Rick Dalton (‘Once Upon A Time In Hollywood’ is my firm #1 movie of the year) for Best Actor at the Oscars. Watching the latest Tarantino movie had me wondering how anyone will even come close to Leo’s performance this year, but it sounds like Joaquin may have a chance.
Many were fairly skeptical of the movie’s premise and if ‘JOKER’ could keep the trend going of standalone DC movies being either decent or flat out good. By the looks of it, this is the model DC needs to keep focusing on. While I love the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I just want all comic book movies to be good. The best of all time, in my opinion, is ‘The Dark Knight’, but Christopher Nolan’s classic might soon have competition from the likes of Todd Phillips. Joaquin Phoenix and ‘JOKER’.
