Steve Irwin's Kids Have Rescued Ninety-THOUSAND Animals From The Australian Wildfires So Far
Source -The family of the late Steve Irwin has helped rescue 90,000 animals including those falling victim to the ongoing wildfire devastation in Australia.
Terri Irwin, the widow of Steve Irwin, and their children, daughter Bindi and son Robert Irwin, own and operate the Australia Zoo’s Wildlife Hospital.
“Wildlife Hospital takes in animals from all over Australia. Hundreds of grey-headed flying foxes, a species listed as vulnerable, have been flown to Queensland after the rescue centre they were recovering in was at risk from fire and evacuated,” Bindi Irwin posted on Instagram, along with images of orphaned fox cubs recovering from the fire.
“This week, we treated our 90,000th patient,” she wrote in the post.
The raging fires, which have burned over 12.35 million acres of land -- about twice the size of Vermont — is believed to have killed nearly 500 million animals since the start of Australia’s bush fire season in September, according to estimates from ecologists at the University of Sydney. That figure only includes mammals and does not include insects, bats or frogs, according to a statement on the university’s website. “The true loss of animal life is likely to be much higher than 480 million,” the statement reads.
Holy moly. I’m not trying to bring anyone’s Monday down, but this story is incredible. Ninety THOUSAND animals saved by the Irwins so far and somehow half a BILLION are already gone? What the fuck. Again, this isn’t something I’d normally blog, but it’s literally the biggest story in the world behind WWIII so I feel like I have to. Plus, I was a massive Crocodile Hunter fan back in the day so I know how important wildlife coverage and conservation is to the Irwins.
If you haven’t seen any of the photos or videos of what’s going on in Australia, they’re absolutely terrifying. Here are a few:
The fires are currently so strong that they’re creating their own weather systems.
Source – The wildfires that are ravaging parts of Australia are burning through vegetation under such extreme conditions the blazes are generating enough heat to create their own weather systems, including fire-generated thunderstorms and fire tornadoes.
Scary stuff. I don’t know what the world can do other than hope and pray for rain. Thank God for people like the Irwins. Hopefully this nightmare ends soon.
