The Turning: A Horrendous Movie With An Impressively Stupid Ending

Holy shit, man...

A young governess is hired by a man who has become responsible for his young nephew and niece after the deaths of their parents. A modern take on Henry James' novella The Turn of the Screw. (via Google)

Jeff D Lowe (03/100): ‘The Turning’ is not just a terrible movie, it also contains one of the worst endings to a movie I have ever seen. The payoff and wrap-up of the movie borders on the level of “I want a refund” when it comes to satisfaction.

What the fuck is this movie, man?

I am not spoiling anything when I ask these questions, so here we go… What was the ending? Why was it so abrupt? Were the characters all separate, or were they younger and older versions of each other? Was the entire movie real? Was the main character Kate hallucinating the entire time? What the fuck was happening?

There is nothing wrong with an ambiguous and abrupt ending, but good lord at least make the build-up somewhat intriguing. ‘The Turning’ is a fucking bore, and the way the movie closes is nonsensical and, quite frankly, bullshit.

The acting is “okay,” you’ll always get a good performance from Mackenzie Davis and Finn Wolfhard and the young Brooklynn Prince (‘The Florida Project’) has impressive acting chops. Everything else is either incredibly average or just plain bad. None of the horror elements really get you going, and the mystery and intrigue hold little to no emotional weight.

In 2019, the lowest rating a gave a movie was 05/100 (‘The Hustle’), between ‘The Turning’ and ‘The Grudge’ (01/100), I have already given out two lower scores to start 2020.

The month of January continues to be a trash heap for bad movies and ‘The Turning’ further enforces that theory.

KenJac (04/100): This is the worst movie of 2020 so far for a number of reasons. Its over-reliance on jump scares, lazy writing, an abundance of cliches and patently ABSURD ending represent all that is wrong with the horror genre. I have a thesis on said genre that I reiterated most recently in our review for ‘The Grudge’: 95% of horror movies are utter trash, but the remaining 5% is fucking amazing. This movie falls in the 95%.

I’m not going to put any fault on the cast, at least not Brooklynn Prince who I loved in ‘The Florida Project’. They all did their jobs fairly well but weren’t given much to work with. The problems with this movie are all structural. It feels like an artificial intelligence loaded all the horror movies ever made and farded out the entire thing.

Like, zero ingenuity whatsoever. To be clear, this would be fine and I could lump this together with the mediocre horror movies if it was at least competently made. What makes this movie so fucking bad is that it’s not. It’s a structural disaster with horrible dialogue, no intrigue, and one of the worst endings I have ever seen. I cannot emphasize the word worst enough here. I’m talking about the ending of ‘St. Elsewhere’ level bad (google it). Avoid this movie at all costs and go watch ‘Midsommar’ on Amazon Prime instead.
