The Red Sox have re-signed Mitch Moreland
I’ll be completely honest with you, I did not think that Mitch Moreland would be returning to the Boston Red Sox after the 2019 season, but it makes a ton of sense.
There hasn’t been much chatter around the veteran first baseman this offseason, so we really don’t have an understanding of what his market was, which teams were in on him or what kind of offers he was fielding. But from a Red Sox standpoint, why not? You’re getting a great defender at a position where you didn’t have anybody, really, to play the position.
Michael Chavis was an option, but first base is not his natural position. Neither was second base, but that’s besides the point. You’ve got Bobby Dalbec who has played some first base in the minors, but is a natural third baseman. The point is, you didn’t have a proven major league first baseman with spring training right around the corner. Now you do.
Three million bucks is also nothing for the Oakland Red Sox this winter. Speaking of the A’s, this winter reminded me of the scene from Moneyball where Billy Beane has a bunch of first basemen who had never played first base in the big leagues before. “Right now, if a ball gets hit to first base, there’s nobody there to stop it.” That’s no longer true. Mitchy Two Bags is back.
