Phillies to Retire Roy Halladay’s Number 34 on the 10 Year Anniversary of his Perfect Game
As the sports world has been in mourning the past 2 weeks, it seems like a good time for the Phillies to pay homage to the team’s biggest loss in recent history. It’s hard to think of a player in Philadelphia that was more beloved in such a short stint. He essentially only played for 3 years (there was an injury plagued 4th year). He made it to the postseason twice. He never won a World Series, He never even played in a World Series, but god dammit did he do everything he could to get us there. Playing for one of the most underachieving teams in my lifetime, Doc was never to blame. After putting out regular seasons in 2010-2011 that included a 40-18 record with an average of 2.40 ERA and one Cy Young, Doc put up a postseason ERA of 2.37 in 5 games, one of which being the second playoff no hitter in the history of Major League Baseball.

Doc had so many powerful moments in Philly that shaped young baseball fans lives, none of which more powerful that that dominant perfect game performance against the Marlins in 2010, which makes this jersey retirement even more special.
It's hard to explain how much Doc meant to Philadelphia. He exemplified what it meant to be a Philly athlete. He wasn't flashy, he didn't care about the personal accolades, he didn't care about the hype, he just put his head down and went to work every single day. Doc will always be a Philly legend and I can't think of a more deserving player to receive this honor.
RIP Doc
