Should The Bears Bring Back Greg Olsen?

I love Greg Olsen.

I think it'd be hard for you to find anybody in Chicago (or any football fan for that matter) who doesn't. He's a great player on the field. Good person off of it. Hell, he even has something to do with me writing this blog today as I got my start with Barstool meeting all the guys at his kickball tournament in 2013.

But, is bringing him back a great idea after 13 years in the league?

He turns 35 in March. He was injured for most of 2017 & 2018, but bounced back for an average year in 2019 given the questionable Quarterback situation in Carolina. Before that though he was obviously one of the best tight ends in the league who was the top target for a team that made the Super Bowl.

What I keep coming back to though when people question if he has anything left in the tank is him being a smart dude who knows himself better than any of us. He can have any job with a TV network that he wants. He just saw his good friend Luke Kuechly walk away from the game. If he genuinely didn't feel that he couldn't perform then I don't think he'd still be trying to play.

As far as the Bears are concerned - we've seen how much a tight end in this offense matters (with Travis Kelce's production for the Chiefs) and we know that the Bears current group of TE's have been incredibly disappointing. The problem is that they're pretty handcuffed to them though. If Pace cuts Trey Burton then they have to eat 7.5M in dead cap which isn't likely to happen. Then there's also no reason to cut Shaheen either as he's in the last year of his rookie deal.

I don't know if the Bears would take the chance, but I think I'd be in on a 2 year deal ($6M?) with as little dead money as possible in the second year because why not? Tight End was a huge missing component last year so making a small risk high reward move seems worth it to me.

P.S. - Obligatory - FUCK MIKE MARTZ
