The Vintage 'Simpsons' Valentine's Episode Takes You Into the Holiday Weekend
Two clips that so perfectly sum up the episode that so perfectly summed up the anguish that is Valentine's Day. Homer being forced to grossly overpay for a last second, unthoughtful gift for Marge. The mindless busy work of Lisa's class having to make paper mailboxes. Bart's inappropriate candy hearts. The bizarre non-sequitor of Skinner's Vietnam flashback. Lisa taking pity on the Ralph Wiggum and his useless social cooties. And then finally tearing his heart in two on live television.
This one aired in 1993, which would make it Season 4, which was the unquestioned peak of "The Simpsons" run. It would stay on top of its game for years to come, but it would never be better than this, its sweet spot. This was the season of the Monorail, The Itchy & Scratchy Movie, Marge doing "A Streetcar Named Desire" and Homer having a heart attack, among other classics. And this one was up there with their very best.
If this was a perfect world, I'd get to stay in an binge all the Valentine's episodes from "The Simpsons" prime. But true love comes at a cost. Even after 26 years of marriage. Happy Valentine's Day to all. Here's hoping somebody Choo Choo Chooses you.
