Tennis Legend And All-Time Smoke Maria Sharapova Retires At The Age of 32

Vanity Fair

How do you leave behind the only life you’ve ever known? How do you walk away from the courts you’ve trained on since you were a little girl, the game that you love—one which brought you untold tears and unspeakable joys—a sport where you found a family, along with fans who rallied behind you for more than 28 years?

I’m new to this, so please forgive me. Tennis—I’m saying goodbye.

Tennis legend Maria Sharapova retired today at the age of 32 years old. Honestly it's pretty insane she's only 32 with how long we've heard her name for right? I mean she looks not a day older than 25, but Maria has been around the sport of tennis for what feels like is an eternity. A five time grand slam champion, and a winner of all four majors, Sharapova had an incredible 17 year career where she became one of the faces of the entire sport. Was it marred a little bit with her doping suspension at the end of it? No question, people hate her for it and always will, but the name Maria Sharapova is as popular as it gets. You don't even have to watch tennis to know who she is.

Sharapova earned $285 million in prize money over her lengthy career and will go off into the sunset now at the age of 32. Not too bad huh? Imagine retiring with all that money in the bank and still having most of your 30s to go? No wonder she's stepping away....and also the fact that she couldn't really keep up with the young talent in today's game.

I'll always remember how she was 2-20 career against Serena in her career. No matter what power game she brought and how confident she entered each match Serena would destroy her. Tale as old as time. Against everyone else in her prime she would dominate. Just not Serena.

It still blows my mind that she was engaged to Lakers guard Sasha Vujacic of all people. How? All-time smoke and she was wifed up with the Lakers shitty shooting guard? Mind bottling.
