Mike Tyson Breaks Down In Tears As He Reveals He's Afraid Of His Old Self In Phenomenal Interview
I, almost, hit this blog title with a must-watch. I, personally, think it is. Here is the transcribed version for those who can't watch:
"I knew them all, I studied them all, I know the art of fighting, I know the art of war. That's all I ever studied. That's why I'm so feared. That's why the feared me in the ring....it's all I was born for. Now those days are gone. It's empty. I'm nothing. I'm working on the art of humbleness....that's the reason I'm crying, I'm not that person no more and I miss him. Because sometimes I feel like I'm a bitch. I don't want that person to come out, because if that person comes out, hell is coming with him. It's not funny at all. I sound cool like I'm a tough guy.....I hate that guy, I'm scared of him."
The quote is great, but you really need to watch the video to hear it come from Mike Tyson.
After hearing this, I thought back to the story about Mike Tyson's mentor Cus D'amato. As the story goes, Tyson was hypnotized into being the heavyweight killer he became by Cus D'amato. He trained with D'amato in the Catskills of New York, where he became a historian on the sport of boxing. Cus D'amato was with Tyson for almost his entire career and there are even stories of him hypnotizing Tyson before every single one of his fights to get into the proper killer mindset. Tyson talked about this on Joe Rogan's podcast:
All of this makes even more sense hearing him talk in the clip above on Sugar Ray Leonard's podcast. It sent chills down my spine. The story of Mike Tyson is a lot deeper than what we see on the surface and you can see how much it's affected him.
