Wake Up With Tony Gwynn And His Inside-The-Park Grand Slam
Tony Gwynn only hit 135 homers in his Hall Of Fame career, but this was probably the coolest one. An inside-the-park grand slam against the Dodgers back in 1997. Bags full of Padres and one of the greatest hitters EVER at the plate. Gwynn slaps one the other way, Brett Butler thinks he has a play on it and holy shit is he wrong.
Good God what a terrible attempt at a diving catch. Ball bounces 3 feet in front of Butler and it rolls to the wall. Gwynn wasn't necessarily the speediest guy, but he wasn't a turtle either. But he was on his horse here. Bases clear, and by the time the center fielder gets to the ball and gets it back in, Gwynn is rounding third and headed for home. Mike Piazza can't gather the relay throw and Gwynn slides in safe. He was a thiccc boy, but he was moving. I'm now currently looking over his baseball reference page and the numbers are some of the funniest things I've ever seen. Never walked more than 82 times in a single season in his career and retired with an OBP of .388. Didn't hit .300 only once in his career and it was his rookie season where he batted .289. Career high in strikeouts was 40.....40. RIP to the legend that is Tony Gwynn.
