What Will The Wizards Do With the 46th Pick In the Draft?
Realistically, the Wizards can do anything with the pick. They need help everywhere. Pretty much everyone from the frontcourt besides Nene is a free agent. Gortat, Booker, Seraphin, Harrington, and Gooden can all test the open market come mid July. Obviously Gortat is the piece you want back there, but he might demand a ton of money based on how well he played all season. Booker really developed off the bench and was the only decent big guy that came off the bench. So clearly, adding depth and size upfront is a must.
However, taking a point guard to play behind John Wall would also make a ton of sense. The only other PG under contract for next season is 110 year old Andre Miller. They need to find a serviceable backup to Wall, which was a problem all season long. Wouldn’t even mind them trading the pick if they could get a guy who they could actually trust to play minutes who won’t be a liability to the team.
And of course, with so few players under contract, they can just go best player available, or take a Euro and stash him overseas for a while. But I think the Wiz HAVE to bring in a guy and start developing him. It’s such a deep draft, so there will be value to be had at 46 and the ability to potentially steal a guy who will drop. There are rumors the Wiz are enamored with James Michael McAdoo, which I wouldn’t really like since they just used the third overall pick last year on Otto Porter.
Realistically though, picking at 46 is a crapshoot, we all know this. But seeing as the Wizards need depth, any way they go could immediately help the team. It feels good not to have a lottery pick, but kinda kills the excitement of the whole thing too. I guess I could get used to it though. That whole “making the NBA playoffs” thing was pretty fun.
