It Sounds Like The NCAA Tournament Might Be Going Back To Just 64 Teams This Year, So Let's Go Ahead And Make That A Permanent Thing
Now this is something I can get behind. There were rumors of the all-inclusive tournament or going to like 96 teams. Hell no. Make it the even 64. Sure, we get 4 extra games on Tuesday/Wednesday, but I don't care. The NCAA Tournament will always be a 64-team event. I don't want to hear about the run VCU made after winning a First Four game to the Final Four. Be good enough to be in the 64 field. That's the way it was and how it should be.
I'm assuming they are making the change this year in case teams don't play enough or teams have to drop out, but it's just how it should be. No one actually considers the First Four winning a Tournament game. It's a play-in, but you know what else are play-ins? The regular season and the conference tournaments. Want to get in the field of 64, win your conference tournament or be good enough in the regular season. Pretty simple theory there. You get roughly 30 games to prove yourself.
The NCAA Tournament is awesome. But you know when people start caring? The Thursday tipoff. Sure, I care about the First Four and Dayton cares about the First Four and if your team is playing there you get into it. But let's not pretend like that's the NCAA Tournament. Give me a field of 64 or give me more time to complain.
