We Must Do Everything in Our Power to Save the SEC on CBS Theme Song
After being reported for almost a year, it appears the SEC is set to officially announce Thursday night that ESPN will take over the SEC's top game of the week, which is currently owned by CBS. ESPN already owns everything else in college football, so this isn't really that big of a deal to the average fan, but the SEC on CBS leaving comes with a devastating consequence: the likely departure of the best theme song in sports.
And if ESPN is able to acquire the last few years remaining on the SEC's contract with CBS, the song could be gone from our lives even more quickly than we thought. We still have three seasons left right now, but it sounds like Disney is going to try its best to buy those years out. I suppose there's a chance next Saturday could be the last time we ever hear the song open an SEC broadcast.
But I am here to plead with the powers that be at Disney: please buy this song. I don't care what it costs. You're already reportedly paying more than $300 million per year for the package, what's another few million to keep this song in our lives? When I turn on the SEC game of the week at 3:30, I expect to hear that tune reverberating through my ears. It is my favorite reminder that another autumn Saturday has fully arrived.
We have already lost so much this year as it relates to college football. The entire sport has been turned upside-down and we're not sure when it will be back to its old ways. But we simply cannot have this theme song leave us. I won't accept it.
