I know the chances of this being read is slim with the mass amount of submissions you get, but I figured I’d give it a shot on behalf of a friend’s business. The work you have been doing for the country is amazing, and I wanted to bring one of our local businesses to your attention.
Founded in 1937, Mitla Cafe in San Bernardino, CA and has been a staple in the community for generations. This restaurant is owned by a family friend, and has been in his family for 83 years, and owned and managed by four generations of his family, all while still standing in the same location 83 years later. Though the City of San Bernardino has changed over the years, Mitla Cafe has remained a constant, with the same mission for the past 80 years: to serve great food with that home cooked feel.
This restaurant in particular has a unique history. Since it is located on the historic Route 66, a lot of well-known individuals have frequented this restaurant, with one of them being Glen Bell. Bell went on to open his initial restaurant across the street from Mitla and was inspired by the success of its Tacos. He used Mitla as an inspiration for his creation of Taco Bell. (Including link below as well as a link to the episode available on Netflix of Ugly Delicious “Tacos” episode which features Mitla Cafe).
As a result of COVID-19, the business has severely struggled, with the family owners continuing to go into debt to try and maintain the jobs of those who have worked at the restaurant for most of their lives. Most recently, one of the owners contemplated selling his vehicle so that they can continue payroll. Reaching out to you to help this business maintain its place in the San Bernardino community, as it has for the past 8 decades. As I am reaching out on my friends behalf, please let me know if there is any other additional information you’ll need for consideration. Thank you so much in advance.
