5 Minority Owners Of The Tampa Bay Rays Are Suing Majority Owner Stuart Sternberg For Squeezing Them Out

The Athletic - Five minority owners of the Tampa Bay Rays are suing majority owner Stuart Sternberg, alleging he has engaged in "a relentless scheme" to "squeeze" them out and take control of the franchise.

The 24-page complaint, which was filed in Florida state court on Saturday, alleges Sternberg has been "secretly negotiating to sell an interest" in the team to Canadian businessman Stephen Bronfman and his Montreal Baseball Group.

There's nothing more awkward then having to sue one of your work friends for gross financial fraud. I know we think rich people have it easy but when you fuck your buddy over at the office, it's usually with the copy machine. Or maybe you ate someone else's left overs or just dropped a nuclear bomb in the shit closet. In all respects it's low hanging fruit. Just goofing around the office. Guys being dudes. One guy I used to work with would smell chairs. I'm sure he's on a watch list now.

But once you get rich that stuff isn't funny anymore. You get so bored. Things that used to bring immense joy are nowhere to be found. You just go from one vague meeting to another, circling life at 50,000 feet and judging those less fortunate, or in your words capable. You get paranoid. You get weird. You start reading up on eugenics and alchemy. You buy a low budget baseball team with a a bunch of other lonely rich people still looking to earn the approval of their long dead parents.

It's a fucked up group dynamic anytime you mix a bunch of self made wealthy people on some common goal. Especially when that common goal involves playing home games at the Trop. I'm sure more on this will be reported on in the coming days but scout's honor I would 100% back channel deals with Canada if it meant getting my club out of that hellhole. Fuck that place. The court should just side in favor of whichever party is most likely to get the team a new stadium. Boom problem solved for everyone. Sweet sweet justice layered in positive public policy.

Credit to the Rays for not exploding under this ownership. Arguably the best and most consistent underdog in pro sports. I'll think about Oakland but until then here's more on why the Trop blows:

I'm here for you Rays fans. You deserve better.
