First Take Is Comparing Jameis Winston to PEYTON MANNING After a Preseason Game
We're really going to have to do this shit for a whole season?
Jameis Winston gave a great performance against Jacksonville on Monday night — in a preseason game. And that's not to mention with some help from Marquez Callaway on two spectacular grabs. So naturally, we didn't even make it to 11 a.m. on Tuesday before we had Harry Douglas comparing him to the greatest quarterback of all-time on ESPN's airwaves.
Look, Winston is a fine NFL quarterback. He probably falls into the category of being "underrated" because everybody had fun shitting on him when he threw 30 interceptions. But now every talking head is doing the thing where they say he's underrated and nobody is talking about him, when in fact he's probably now overrated and everybody is talking about him.
On the whole, he's a serviceable NFL starter who will likely do a fine job replacing Drew Brees. But we have to stop with this nonsense about him being a Hall of Famer or now being Peyton Manning.
You know how I know Winston will never be in the same stratosphere as Manning? Because he had to sign a contract to be a back-up last season. Never in Manning's career was there even a thought of him becoming a back-up quarterback after starting for five seasons, because it was clear by that point he was an elite talent.
In Manning's seventh season, he completed 67.6 percent of his passes for more than 4,500 yards, 49 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. If Winston does that this season, we'll talk again in January. Until then, please just enjoy Jameis being a meme and knock it off with this nonsense.
