Once Again People Are Trying To Cancel Notre Dame's "Fighting Irish" Nickname For Being Offensive

A new survey by Quality Logo Products, a sports apparel company, listed Notre Dame’s Fighting Irish leprechaun as the fourth-most offensive college football team mascot in the nation, according to results published in the Indianapolis Star.

After the results were published, a representative from Notre Dame emailed IndyStar with a written statement to defend its use of the leprechaun.

According to the university, the Fighting Irish nickname began as a derogatory term used by opposing schools at the turn of the century, as most of their students were Irish Catholic. It was then adapted to be the team’s official nickname in 1927 by university president Father Matthew Walsh, who was of Irish descent.

You know what they say...if you can't beat them, cancel them.

The things people like to get angry about will never cease to amaze me. I mean read the news. There are REAL problems in the world right now. Problems like Texas and Oklahoma joining the SEC. And yet with super leagues, realignment, and alliances killing college football the haters refuse to ignore the one tried and true staple of college football...The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.

The article claims that Notre Dame is the 4th most offensive mascot in college football. The top 3 depict First Nations people. How Notre Dame is right behind them is absurd to me. I mean Hurricanes kill people every single year and cause millions of dollars in property damage, but everyone seems to be cool with Miami. Has anyone asked a Gopher how they feel about the University of Minnesota making a mockery of their bucked teeth? I didn't think so.

Back to the "issue" at hand though. Nobody who is Irish and has a brain has ever been even 1% offended by this. We see the Irishman in Braveheart and we love being depicted like that

Sure, the origins of the word Leprechaun comes from the English making a mockery of us and subjugating our ancestors for 800 years, but funny is funny and we love a good joke. Just ask my Grandpa Mac

I am the grandson of a McDonald and a Kirby who came to America from Ireland 100 years ago when they were met with prejudice and spits to the face. Which was better than what they were getting from the English before that. Nobody that is Irish has ever given one single fuck about the Notre Dame nickname. Quite the opposite. We embraced it. It wasn't even the official nickname until 1927 and the Irish President of the University and Irish immigrants all over the country embraced the nickname and leaned into it. That decision made Notre Dame a major brand from sea to shining sea. Notre Dame Poppa Doc'd the haters into becoming a national power. I will never understand the people who get offended by it. There are real problems in the world and ND's mascot ain't one of them. Pick a more worthy cause.

PS: If there was a petition to bring back the Irish Setter as an additional mascot I would get behind that.
