WATCH: Trent Dilfer's Emotional Interview After Winning A State Championship In His Last Game As A High School Coach Will Get You Fired Up
If I were a UAB fan, I would be really excited to see what Trent Dilfer could do as my new head coach.
Dilfer led Lipscomb Academy to a second straight Tennessee state championship on Thursday with a 42-0 win over Christ Presbyterian Academy to cap off a perfect season. Lipscomb went a combined 3-19 in the two years prior to Dilfer's arrival.
Obviously, being a high school head coach is not the same as taking over a college program, but Dilfer has proven at the level he was given an opportunity that he can turn a program around pretty drastically. UAB doesn't require nearly the turnaround Dilfer orchestrated at Lipscomb Academy, either.
But more than the on-field aspect, you can tell from this interview that Dilfer just really gives a shit — which doesn't necessarily translate to success, but pair that with the results I already mentioned and you probably have a pretty good coach.
I'm excited to see what Dilfer is able to do at UAB. The Blazers have been a really good Group of Five program in recent years and I don't see any reason to doubt Dilfer could have them in contention for a College Football Playoff spot when the field expands to 12 in 2024 and includes a guaranteed G5 participant.
