I Caddied For World No. 24 Sahith Theegala For The First Episode Of 'Side Gig'
It's weird when dreams come true. I've had a series like this in mind—me, caddying for a tour pro during a casual round, and interviewing him in the process—for as long as I can remember. Today, it becomes a reality.
I had the pleasure of caddying for Sahith Theegala—world No. 24, top rookie at this year's Masters and star of Netflix's Full Swing—for a casual round at his home course in The Woodlands, Texas. Sahith and I go pretty far back. I'd lose to him in junior golf tournaments in Southern California all the time. I went off to journalism school like a nerd, he headed to Pepperdine and became just the fifth player ever to sweep the three top awards for player of the year. It didn't take long for him to get his PGA Tour card and while he hasn't won yet, he's surely established himself as one of the top up-and-comers in the game.
He also comes from a working-class immigrant family in Chino, Calif—fans of The OC know all about Chino—and didn't grow up on perfectly manicured grasses. He earned everything he has, and he hasn't lost site of that. He's refreshingly unaffected by all the success.
This is a video for the golf nerds; everyone loves caddie-player convos when the broadcasts pic them up. This is 45 minutes straight of that, with a longform interview weaved in-between. I can't wait for you all to see it, and I can't wait to make more in the future.
