A Chicago Cafeteria Worker Has Been Sentenced To 9 Years In Prison For Stealing $1.5 Million Of Chicken Wings
$1.5 million dollars? So what'd she take home, 2 dozen? Nevermind, nevermind. My rant on the continuously skyrocketing price of chicken wings despite the cost of chicken saying it should be dropping is another blog for another day, but the fact that I paid $3 per wing yesterday on an $18 order of SIX for some mid wings has me up in arms. And the blue cheese was extra!
ANYWAYS, the way this story goes is that this 68 year old lady did a little more than what I originally expected when I saw this headline. I figured she was living the dream, ordering extra wings for the kids and setting some aside for her and her husband to eat each week during college and NFL football games. Shit, if I were a cafeteria worker I'd be doing the same damn thing. People in the comments wondering when school cafeterias started serving chicken wings. Let me answer that: they don't. That's where she got caught, spending money on food the kids never even saw. But honestly, if she really wanted to, she could've gotten away with something smaller. If were the head chef, we'd be having wings, burgers, ribs, and anything else I could be taking leftovers of home.
But nope, what she was really doing was using Covid funds that were to be used for meals for families to pick up during remote learning, but instead she was ordering 11,000 cases chicken wings all for herself. Took a big ass school van to pick them up and everything. And instead of returning to the school, she just took them straight to her place in Chicago. Now the article doesn't say it but I'm assuming she was reselling the chicken wings and that's why this is 9 years worth of prison? Don't get me wrong, I like chicken wings as much as the next guy, but 11,000 CASES seems like an amount that a little, old 68 year old might not be able to put down in a two year span. Then again, maybe she was the Belle of the Ball in the neighborhood, hosting block parties each week. Dinner is on Vera again!
Either way, I think she had her opportunity to get away with this right in the beginning of Covid when it says this "criminal enterprise" began. If you thought your $1500 checks every few weeks or the PPP loans were something, you should've seen the shit they were giving schools. But the problem for Ms. Vera here is that she continued it into 2022, where the school audit showed the cafeteria budget was a mere $300,000 over where it should be mid-year. And that's where any good grace that this woman gets from me is gone. How the fuck did you think you were going to continue to get away with this? When the government is paying for everything, fine. But you were filling out order forms and using the school credit card for over $300K and didn't realize someone in the Treasurer's Department would notice? Lock her up for 9 years, not for stealing chicken wings, but for being a fucking moron.
