BLACKSBURG Virginia Tech athletic director Whit Babcock said he “had no idea” that football players were being assessed fines for violations like missing team meetings or being late for meals, and says the practice has been “discontinued” effective immediately.

One player, for example, had been fined $20 for missing a meeting on Aug. 17, $10 for missing breakfast that day and $20 for missing treatment the following day, according to the monitor. Another player was listed as having $100 unsportsmanlike conduct fine and two $20 fines for missing special teams meetings.

In total, the screen showed five players being fined a total of $330.

Not sure what’s funnier – Virginia Tech coaches fining the players whose unpaid labor literally pays their multi million dollar salaries…or the fact that having a dirty locker is a $20 heavier fine than missing a class. Priorities.

And even if you aren’t on board with the paying players argument, fine, that’s your opinion…but this is honestly just flat out embarrassing for the V Tech coaching staff. Like you really have to resort to fining college kids for stuff like being late to practice or having a dirty locker? Your authority is so low and your discipline skills are so bad that you have to resort to taking money like a parent docking their 10 year old’s allowance for not doing his chores? You’re supposed to be the coaches, leaders, teachers, mentors, and authority figures of a MAJOR D1 college football team – dock some fucking playing time or make them run up downs until they puke like every other successful coach has ever done.
