Whoa: Oregon's Dana Altman Just Retired, Effective Immediately, And Less Than A Month Before The First Game Of The Season

Here we go again. This is starting to become a trend with Tony Bennett and Bruce Pearl doing this recently. Now it's Dana Altman. A guy who has been at Oregon since 2010. A guy who just eight games away from winning 800 for his career. A guy who brought Oregon to a couple Final Fours. And, of course, a guy who gave us the most awkward press conference moment in a long time when he was the Arkansas head coach for exactly one day.

I don't think this is some 'college sports is broken' moment. It's Dana Altman being 68-years old and getting to help handpick his successor for a year. That at least seems to be the trend with these late hires. Guys who have been at a school for a decent amount of time with success, getting to hand over a team to a guy for at least a year.

Now here's the caveat. Technically all the players can hit the portal

The sicko in me kind of wants everyone to leave. I actually liked watching Oregon, but what happens if they all hit the portal? It's not going to happen, but I just want to see what the hell happens here. No one really knows why Altman is leaving yet either

I do hate this trend. It's why it's hard for me to completely buy into the whole bring back the old transfer portal. It's why I think I'm fine with the one free transfer and then a free transfer if a coach leaves. But you can't be bailing on a team less than a month before the season starts. I hate that. Obviously anything health related is different, but if you're just retiring because the time is right, you gotta get through the season with it.

Either way, for another year right before the season starts, college basketball loses a staple on the sidelines. Interested to see what the hell happens to Oregon from here.
