Things You Should Know About Freshman Year From A Senior

image

So, I’m sitting in my first day of class as a senior and I’m feeling nogalistic about my freshman year. I’m also in a 100 level class (because I always find the easiest/laziest way to complete my requirements) and I’m watching all the freshman furiously take notes on the first day and it’s hilarious. Here’s some advice from someone who should probably never ever give advice.

1. Almost none of your classes matter

As a freshman you’ll be taking all intro classes and they literally don’t matter at all. It’s like high school all over again and there’s like 400 other people in the class with you. I mean, you should still go because usually professors have some form of attendance taking. And your also paying to take it so as long as it’s 8am I would just go but don’t stress too hard over it. There’s more important things to stress over, like who’s gonna buy your rubinoff for that weekend

2. Freshman 15 isn’t a real thing

Or maybe it is. But, at UMass and most colleges you have to walk miles to class and back to your dorms. It’s also like 90 degrees until late September so you’ll be sweating your ass off all day. usually your still in the habit of working out or being active like you were in high school, that’ll go away after freshman year.

3. You’ll meet all your friends on your floor, probably.

There were a lot go people that I hated on my floor freshman year but I also met all my roommates and best guy friends on my floor. You’ll probably meet other people in different dorms but you’ll quickly become too lazy to go see them and forget about them. It’s WAY easier to just walk down the hall.

4.You’re going to become the worst version of yourself

You’ll start sleeping more, eating more and worse, drinking way more and just become gross and lazy. I used to be able to get up early and go for runs and stuff in high school but now I need several naps a day and running or even walking anywhere is a hard no.

5. Go outside while you can.

Unless you go to school in the south or California you need to be outside these first few weeks whenever you can. Once it gets to be late November were probably going to be under like 3ft of snow, and being trapped in a dorm room all winter is THE WORST. Your dorm room is already pretty similar looking to a prison and in the dead of winter it begins to feel more and more like one, so depressing.

6. No one cares what you look like in class

Don’t try and look nice. It’s a waste of time and energy when you could be sleeping longer, your welcome.
7. You probably don’t have to buy books.

Out of my three years here I’ve probably only gotten good use out of 1 or 2 of my text books. You probably don’t have to buy them, use that 300 dollars for better things.

8. Your RA is probably cool.

My RA freshman year was awesome he didn’t care about anyyyttthing. He just sat in his room and smoked everyday. The RD walking around at 1am is the person you need to watch out for, they suck.

9. You’ll never get used to showering with shoes on.

It’s the weirdest feeling that you never get used to. That was the number one thing I looked forward to when I went home before I lived off campus.

10. College goes by wicked fucking fast so enjoy this year.

But also know that if you don’t have a fun time this year it keeps getting better and better.
