Internet 1.0 Highlights: QVC Ladder And Samurai Sword Disasters
The QVC Disaster videos are perfect Internet 1.0 videos. Kids nowadays probably dont even know what QVC is. The idea of home shopping TV was murdered so swiftly by the internet, its almost poetic that some of the best videos on the internet come from those channels.
The first one is probably the first time I witnessed a death on the internet. Aside from Faces of Death, of course. A man falls about 12 feet and breaks his fall nicely with nothing but his skull. No doubt that Chris died later that night with concussion like symptoms. But the real star of that video is the caller who tries to keep right on selling. ‘That has never happened before.” The host talking about the slippery floors. Never mind the dead dude over there. It was ok to laugh at death in the early days.
The second one is the kitana blade stabbing that guy directly in the stomach. Just whacking that sword against the countertop like it was indestructible. Not since the Titanic has something malfunctioned that quickly. One of the most beautiful examples of serendipity the internet ever experience. “OHHHH just the tip. The tip just got me O’Dell.” By the way, O’Dell is an internet legend:
O’Dell was like “I didnt hear anyone say cut!” Jumped right in front of the camera and started talking about emergency surgery in the studio. Legend.
