So Is Calvin Johnson Retired Or Not?
ALLEN PARK, Mich. (CBSNewYork/AP) — The Detroit Lions are still giving Calvin Johnson time to ponder his future.
The team issued a statement Sunday, saying it stands by its previous statement that supported Johnson, after ESPN reported that the superstar receiver told family, friends and Lions coach Jim Caldwell that he is retiring. ESPN did not name its sources.
Johnson declined to say last season if he would restructure his contract, which calls for him to count $24 million against the salary cap in 2016.If the 30-year-old Johnson chooses to retire, he will walk away from the game
despite having the physical ability to play more, just as Hall of Fame running back Barry Sanders did. Sanders was 30 in 1998, his 10th and final season with the Lions.
Forgive me because my brain is Jello from living fake life on an RV bus the past 5 days but what’s going on with Calvin Johnson? Yesterday I see he’s decided to retire, I say a little prayer as a Bears fan that was constantly tortured by his other worldly abilities, everyone tweets out their memories of Megatron, I even emailed my guys Detroit Don and Superfan to send my condolences like they had a family member die, then I wake up this morning and see it’s still up in the air according to the Lions? Huh? So is he retired or not? And if he is retired what the hell do Lions fans do now? 2 Hall of Fame players walking away with gas still left in the tank, basically saying no thanks, I’d rather not cash checks and chill in my house than play for the Detroit Lions. That feels like a problem. I know people will say it’s football in 2016 and players are now retiring earlier and earlier but if the Lions are competitive do you really think Megatron walks away from this team? If their franchise isn’t a clusterfuck year in and year out is he even considering it? He’s probably sick of doing the same thing with the same results every single year, and as a fan of a shitty team as well that has had its own clusterfuck years, I can’t really blame him, it gets beyond exhausting and I’m just a guy sitting on his couch picking lint out of his belly button, not taking bone crushing hits over the middle every Sunday.
