John Calipari Takes a Gigantic Dump All Over Rick Pitino, Has Turned Full Heel
[Mike Lupica Show] “All I can tell you is this: If it happens on your campus and it happens with your assistants and those people, you probably have a good idea of what’s going on,” Calipari said. “It happens back in their hometown, it happens back with their family … there’s no way you can know. You just can’t know. All I can say is most coaches have an idea if it happened on their campus. You might not be the first to know about it but you eventually hear about it.”
“It depends on who that coach is,” he said. “There will be some coaches that everybody will say, ‘There’s no way he knew,’ and there will be other coaches who [people] will say, ‘He knew what happened with that family in eighth grade, he knew, you know he knew, he knew.'”
This is peak Calipari this offseason and anyone around college basketball is a fan, especially if you’re a Kentucky fan. This is ‘Swaggy Cal’ as he’s taken shots at K, Rick Pitino and Roy Williams now, all while promoting crazy ass ideas like the SEC Tournament in November with multiple games going on at the same time.
You know why he’s doing this? For shit like this. He has everyone in the college basketball world talking about Kentucky and his guys. It’s why he goes on the record and says Jamal Murray should be the No. 1 overall pick? You don’t think the top-10 guys in the Class of 2017 don’t hear that and get excited?
He can also do this because he owns Pitino. He has one loss to Rick since he became the head coach of Kentucky and has absolutely been the big brother in this situation. Year after year Pitino thinks he has a chance to beat Kentucky and eventually he leaves the floor giving the fans the finger. Meanwhile Cal sits there and constantly pokes at him. He knows he has the dominance in his back pocket and can pull it out whenever he wants. When you’re 8-1 against a guy, including 2 wins in the NCAA Tournament, you can shit on him in public like this.
Calipari excels at this and he’s been doing it all summer. ‘This’ is the ability to take a shot at another coach without saying their name, so it leaves everyone out there to wonder who and gives him the ability to deny it when it gets brought up. He’s also doing this while defending himself – which I know a ton of people out here will get pissed off about, but can you blame him?
He says how it’s ‘impossible to know when things go on at home’ something that is fairly true for college basketball coaches. There’s only so much policing the coaching staff can do when kids go home for the summer and the coaches are on the road recruiting. On the flipside he wants to remind everyone about UNC and Louisville and what exactly has gone on there.
But back to the shots. This is what college basketball needs. It needs the rivalries to be heated. Pitino and Calipari need to hate each other. Duke and Kentucky need to hate each other. It makes the sport that much better, especially when you’re talking about 4 of the 10 best programs in the history of the sport. These guys – especially K and Cal – go up against each other in recruiting, which is starting to become a little more public.
With how much college football dominates the headlines throughout the year, it’s refreshing to see college basketball pop up, even for shit like this. So before people get in an uproar, just know this is Cal keeping Kentucky in the headlines, strictly for recruiting purposes. He can go around and tell everyone ‘who else is being talked about in June?’
Now I’m going to need K, Pitino and Roy to form some sort of weird ass group to attack Calipari back. Let’s keep this going until October and hopefully we see the next Emoji War a la Mavs/Clippers last year.
