We Got Ourselves a Coach Fight! Pitino Responds to Calipari

“Whether it’s Duke last month or us this month, these type of comments – we’re here to build up the image of college basketball, not tear people down,” Pitino said, making a reference to Calipari’s recruiting manifesto that many believed was a shot at Duke and its recruiting tactics.

“I don’t live in a glass house, and I don’t throw stones.”

Finally. A week after Calipari made some comments about coaches knowing what happens on their campus – and a direct shot at Rick Pitino and Louisville – Ricky P responded. He was on a local Louisville show yesterday and started off by dismissing the comments – only to go on a rant lasting several minutes.

The rant had the above quote, which is one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen. Sure, Pitino doesn’t throw stones. He just throws his team under the bus. First off, why does Pitino want to build up the image of college basketball? If anything this is helping. It’s giving personality to coaches – not that these guys need anymore personality – but it’s adding to a rivalry.

People love to bitch about the one-and-dones in college basketball and how you rarely get to cheer for a player, but instead as Clem once said you associate teams with their coaches. Well, here are the three biggest coaches in college basketball right now all sort of arguing with each other.

Pitino says he’s going to question Calipari if he seems him out on the recruiting trail this summer. I’d say based on the last couple of years that won’t happen since Pitino hasn’t been able to land a big time recruit like Duke or Kentucky. That is however a conversation I’d like to see.

In the meantime I just assume Cal is walking around like this:
