What Are The Five Most Underrated Episodes Of "It's Always Sunny" Ever
I’ve been down in Newport all week and never bothered to get cable here because… well, because it’s the summer so why the hell do you need tv? Go to the bar for games, Netflix when you’re bored, HBOGo when The Night Of starts pumping out new eps. That’s all you need.
Since Netflix has been my only source of entertainment the last few days, I’ve been on a serious, serious It’s Always Sunny binge and along my travels I’ve been discovering more and more episodes that are wildly underrated. Since compiling a “Best of Sunny” list is so impossible and there are 50 episodes that everyone loves that you’d have to squeeze into a top 5 I decided to try a most underrated episodes list.
Note: To be fair, I think most people think that every episode of Sunny is the best episode ever once it’s done, and I started my binge on season 5 so it’s mostly later seasons since those are fresh in my mind. I tried to throw in a few old schools too, however.
Flowers for Charlie
All time M Night ending in this one and a classic Charlie Kelly episode. The episode on it’s own is hysterical but when you get to the last 5 minutes and find out what was really happening it’s incredible. Realizing that Charlie was just yelling jibberish instead of Mandarin while he walked around listening to two books on tape, boiling poisons, pretending to read War and Peace, and haphazardly moving chess pieces is A+++ stuff.
Gang Gets Analyzed
This was the episode that hatched the idea for the list, as there are about 15 laugh out loud moments in the episode. From Dennis’ psychopathy and him keeping psychological dossiers on everyone, to Mac’s obsession with the pen, to Frank getting “UNZIPPED,” to Charlie’s dead pigeon he hugged too hard, and Dee’s insisting that she was supposed to star in The Notebook it’s all gold.

Charlie Work
This is a classic Sunny ep. Crazy scam that gets them in quite the bind and a lot of calling Dee a bitch. What sets it apart is the commercial free, continuous shot of Charlie losing his fucking mind as he tries to tie it all together. It was an awesome episode with incredible camera work and some seriously great acting from Charlie.
Cereal Defense
The entire trial is gold, but “Science is a liar sometimes” is absolutely fantastic. One of the better scenes the show’s done.
Gang Gets Whacked
This could be not underrated but just so old people don’t talk about it anymore, however the gang trying to sell coke at a race track only to have Charlie become a stall boy and Dennis become a male escort is tremendous. Laugh out loud every time the jockey tries to get Charlie to do a line off his boner.
Gang Tries To Win An Award
It’s Always Sunny never even being NOMINATED for an Emmy is one of the great injustices in our world today, as it’s been the hands down best comedy on TV for a decade. The gang gets meta here and tries to kiss ass for a Best Bar award only to realize it’s not “their kind,” the rough around the edges, profane types that win awards. It’s the lame, predictable, benign shows like fucking Big Bang Theory.
The World Series Defense
Lawyer Charlie Kelly is always good for 10-100 laughs and that comes with a side of Green Man. Also, the introduction of Riot Punch, which is what everyone should call Jungle Juice forever.
Dennis Reynolds: An Erotic Life
Typically in an Always Sunny episode there is a clear funniest story line, assuming that the gang has split up. In this one, it’s all gold. Charlie and Dee trying to live each other’s lives, Frank and Mac trying to meet with Mr. Bo Vine Joni (Bon Jovi), and Dennis getting locked in a fucking mental institution with Sinbad and Matchbox 20’s Rob Thomas are all hilarious bits. It’s impossible to lock down which part of this episode is the funniest.
PS – If you’ll notice, I couldn’t even limit this to 5 episodes.
