Actually, The Big Little Lies Finale Left A Lot To Be Desired

Spoilers inside. Duh

From the onset of the show, I loved it. The cast was just too good for a TV show for it to suck. Reece, Nicole, the woman from Divergent, the dude from Generation Kill. Electric. HBO was about to do it again.

The show is dark and full of great music. In fact, EIC Kmarko and I have been listening to the soundtrack of the show on nearly repeat all season.

I knew pretty early on that Jane was raped by Perry. I thought it was pretty obvious to anyone with a brain. Perry was just an evil fucker. Ed and Madeline were annoying. Their storyline was boring and trite. Madeline was still upset at her ex after all these years and Ed felt like he was second fiddle. BORRRINNNGGGG.

Renata was a typical mom, and I don’t mean that in a bad way. Concerned about her kid and wanted to fuck anyone up who was hurting her daughter. I like that. Bad bitches only.

You could feel the show building to an ultimate moment. When Celeste was lying facedown on the floor in the bathroom, I felt sick. Perry was just so brutal to her. Perry ushering the kids out of the bathroom while their mother was laid out, nearly nude on the floor… it was wrenching to watch. Her body writhing in pain and disgust as he tried to touch her while she was lying there. Awful.

The kiss that Perry made Celeste give him after beating her was chilling. Celeste open-mouthed kiss him with a little bit of passion and you thought from there that Celeste was gonna murder his ass. I couldn’t wait. She put aside that hatred knowing that she would rip his heart out soon. She needed that payoff. Fuck, the viewers did too.

The next thing you know, the entire cast is singing its dick off. Everyone on the show is not only rich and attractive, they can also sing. Lawyers, computer engineers, yoga instructors, stay-at-home moms. Everybody has the voice of an angel.

Perry tells Celeste that he knows about the apartment and you know it’s about to get real.

Fighting. Arguing. Crying. Running away. All expected.

The show meets it’s crescendo when Perry chases Celeste around a corner where all the other female characters are as well. Perry attacks, and then police lights.

We then see Perry with a stick in the neck and dead. What in the fucken heck? Celeste deserved to be the one who killed Perry. Getting pushed by Bonnie and happening to land on a stick? Terrible. Perry shouldn’t have been let off that easily. We needed a moment like this for Perry.

That is a satisfying death for a villain, not falling on a stick.

After Perry dies, all the girls are best pals. Jane’s rapist, who was Perry obviously, is dead. Celeste’s children won’t grow up with an abusive dad. Great. Good. Fine.

The internet was loving the finale.

I wasn’t. This story was too fucked up for such a clean ending. Everyone pulling together to defeat the antagonist. Everyone becomes friends and lives happily ever after in their upper-class city with no more issues. Ex-wives and current wives become friends. The abused have moved on to a carefree life on the beach. Blah. A story this violent and dark needed some strings that were left untied.

The show was great. The ending was too clean. Sometimes a mess doesn’t need to be cleaned up right away. Sometimes you gotta rub your puppy’s face in it. Not enough poop on my face after that mess. The music was great, though. No denying that.
