CNN is Accused of Staging a Fake News Anti-ISIS Protest in London

.

SourceCNN is dismissing critics who claim the network staged a demonstration to make Muslims look sympathetic in light of the weekend terror attacks in London.

A video uploaded online showed CNN correspondent Becky Anderson preparing to narrate video of a group of Muslims holding up signs in solidarity with the victims of the attacks.

Before Anderson begins her reporting, the demonstrators are seen being guided by police into a spot together so that the camera can frame the shot in an area that had been blocked off by police.

The video was uploaded to YouTube with the title, “CNN staging the narrative before making report, they are truly Fake News!” …

“This story is nonsense,” CNN said in a statement. “The group of demonstrators that was at the police cordon was being allowed through by officers so they could show their signs to the gathered media. The CNN crew along with other media present simply filmed them doing so.”

So now we find ourselves in like Stage 5 of the Post Terror Attack spin cycle. I don’t have them numbered but it’s whatever stage comes after “Develop a Hashtag” and just before “Turn it Into an Argument About Religion, Immigration and/or Gun Ownership.” It’s the “Get Outraged About the Media Reaction” stage.

And this particular story is getting a lot of traction, mainly from the alt-righters who are posting this with headlines like “SHOCK VIDEO” where they break it down like football all-22s tape. For instance, noticing that once the group is assembled, white cops step aside and are replaced by Asian cops. Which points to some sort of conspiracy to … promote diversity? Understanding? Peaceful protest? I guess? I don’t know.

Actually the CNN explanation sounds fairly plausible to me. In that Occam’s Razor way where it’s a much simpler explanation than Scotland yard and the media are collaborating to hire Muslim and Asian actors in order to stage an anti-ISIS demonstration to drive TV ratings or whatever. And I say this as someone who lives by the philosophy you believe none of what you read and half of what you see.

Do I think TV news would set up a camera shot? Positively. All the time. It’s part of the job. When I was working for the court system, I was in Cambridge for the shaken baby trial with the British nanny. On the news they made it look like there was a throng of protesters out there every day, when in fact it was about 10-12 pathetic souls who looked like if they weren’t there marching on behalf of a drunk party girl who treated a baby in her care like an Etch-a-Sketch, they would’ve been somewhere else protesting someone else. But the news crews put the cameras right down on the sidewalk to make them look more impressive and less like the sad loners they were.

The point being that there’s a hell of big difference between setting up a shot to make a story look more dramatic and actually “staging the narrative.” But like everything we see now, this story is Fake News covering Fake News, like holding a mirror up to another mirror to get infinite fakery. When in fact there is plenty enough real Fake News to make it so we don’t have to fake Fake News. And just typing that sentence made my hair hurt and makes me never want to follow the news ever again. So if you’ll excuse me, I’m just going binge “Orange is the New Black” until the world ends.
