Connor McDavid Is Officially Rich
Before everyone immediately jumps on to that $13.25M AAV, let’s just put that shit in perspective real quick.
Now I’m not too big on math but I’m gonna go ahead and believe this without double checking the numbers. So Crosby signed for $8.7 million in 2007 (because he is a psychopath about the number 87) and then went on to win 3 Stanley Cups since that time. So I’m pretty sure the Penguins were able to do just fine with putting together a team where 17% of their salary was locked up in one payer.
Plus McDavid signed for 8 years. Like Friedman’s tweet above said, he could have gone down to 5. Then after 5 he re-ups and signs for $20 million or $50 million or $100 million or whatever anybody wants to pay him. But now he’s locked into Edmonton for 8 years at that $13.25 and by the time he’s up for a new contract, he’ll already have won a few Cups in Edmonton and it’ll be alright if he picks up and moves to another team. As far as signing one of the youngest and one of the greatest players in the world right now, I think the Oilers actually make out pretty well here.
With all that being said, holy shit. Connor McDavid will be making nearly $3 million more than any other player in the National Hockey League in 2018-19. Which is great news for him considering this little thing he’s been carrying on to lately looks like she has some expensive taste.
Good for him. Hart Trophy winner. Ted Lindsay Award winner. Art Ross Trophy winner. Highest paid player in the league. And is wheeling around a rocket. Not bad for a kid who has to spend the next 8 years of his life in Edmonton.
