The Details Of Derrick Rose's MASSIVE Adidas Contract Are Absolutely Awesome

SI.com - If NBA players came with a stock price, late February 2012 represented the peak of the market for Derrick Rose.

Rose’s agents were aggressively renegotiating his deal with Adidas, and during All-Star weekend Rose re-signed, consecrating one of the most lucrative endorsement contracts (reported to be worth $185 million over 14 years) in the history of sports.

Recently SI obtained his 40-page contract with Adidas, and the document shows just how far shoe companies are willing to go to accommodate an athlete. The deal called for annual retainers of $12 million per season from 2012–13 until ’16–17. (This season, he is entitled to $11 million.) It also included annual royalties of up to $6.25 million per year, as much as $4.8 million in annual appearance fees and use of a private plane. (For comparison, SI has learned that John Wall’s new Adidas deal calls for him to be a paid a base salary of $4 million).

And to think Derrick Rose was worried about being able to walk at his children’s high school graduation. With the amount of money Adidas is paying him, this dude will be rocking the most state of the art robotic legs in the history of mankind. Shit, he should just send a letter over to Elon Musk and get fitted with them now. He’ll be back to being an All Star PG in no time. If Elon can send a Tesla to orbit the Earth for the rest of eternity, I’m sure he can whip Derrick Rose up a set of new legs easy peasy. Just slap the 3 stripes on them and he’ll be good as new.

But the fact he’s getting 11 million dollars from Adidas this season (John Wall’s brand new contract gives him $4 million/season) isn’t the best part. The fact he gets another $6 million in royalties isn’t the best part. Nor is the $4.8 million in appearance fees, nor the private jet.

The best part is the following:

Reggie Rose, Derrick’s older brother, is paid between $250,000 and $300,000 annually as a consultant. Randall Hampton, Rose’s best friend since sixth grade and his assistant, is paid between $50,000 and $75,000 annually for “consulting” services. Adidas also pledged to contribute $150,000 annually to the AAU team of Rose’s choice.

His decline in status is reflected starkly in his NBA salary. At one point Rose was earning $20 million per season. Now he plays for the veteran minimum of $2.1 million. And yet, according to records made available to SI, Adidas continues to pay Rose in full.

What a boss. He made sure his brother got in the contract as a “consultant”…getting paid $250,000-$300,000 a year. He made sure his best friend would keep cashing 50-75k yearly checks as well. That’s a ride or die dude. When Adidas wants to pay you $185 million, you make sure your friends and family get their beak wet as well. So if you were ever wondering the going rate of being friends with an NBA superstar, it’s 50-75,000 a year. Not too bad for being nice to a kid in 6th grade social studies class.
